Actually the reason there's no audio in so many security videos is that it IS illegal to record audio without consent in many states, even in security cameras in businesses with posted signs.

I've worked hotels for 10 years, mostly in and around the reservations dept, and this is a well known trick that the industry has adapted to. The four hotels I currently manage reservations for all make note of changes to dates and our staff is trained to watch out for this.

A hilton property I worked would always note the move of dates. Then would still charge the cancel fee by explaining we noted the move of the dates and the sudden next day call to cancel or even a 12 hour later call to get another employee. Most hotels don't let this happen anymore except boutique or low end.
