What doesn’t make sense?  When they travel back and change anything, that creates a new timeline.  When they return whatever they took, it makes sure that new timeline isn’t screwed over by the theft.  There’s no paradoxes because any changes in the past happen in new timelines, they never alter their own past.

Traveling back to his original reality doesn’t violate any rules, it exactly what every one of them did when they took the stones in the first place.  He just spent a lot more time in the forked timeline he created than they did in the “time heist” trips.

It’s only a mess in that a new timeline will play out differently than Steve’s memories of the original one. If that’s a mess, normal reality where people don’t know the future is already a mess.

I disagree. For example (and I’m not saying this is what happened), if you bring your homemade porn into a classroom full of kids and leave it unattended, and one of the kids steals it, then the kid is wrong but you are too and should be fired.
