Serious Q: I agree with Deadspin on almost 99% of your takes. But holy shit, seriously, how can you not realize what a bunch of horse asses the USWNT was vs. Thailand? I don’t get it.

Deadspin, please stop being mad that someone criticised your precious country.

Fuck all this nonsense. Normally deadspin is on point for these things, but it’s just wrong to showboat after scoring 5+ goals against an overwhelmingly inferior team. Run up the score? Fine, since World Cup score differentials matter. But dancing and parading about like assholes makes you look like... assholes.

Or that Deadspin apparently thinks it’s stupid to complain to about it. Thinking what they did is unsportsmanlike is not really that hot of a take

This is a company that said “posting revenge porn is OK”, “publishing the video of an apparent rape is responsible”, and “aiding the extortion/outing of a closeted gay man is good because reasons”.

It wasn’t just the Canadians. It was most soccer insiders, commentators, and fans in Europe too.

I have no experience elite level sports (just competitive rec leagues), but once you’ve shown you can score at will I don’t understand the need/desire to celebrate every goal like it’s an OT winner. Obviously put them in the net every time you get the chance, because differential matters and anyone who still doesnt

Deadspin completely misses the point. Color me shocked.

accomplishing something great

Beating Thailand is not “great”. The talent disparity is massive. Score all you want because the rules use goal differential as a tiebreaker. But don’t act like you just won the whole tournament. Same applies to men, kids, college. If this were hockey a losing team would have put a few players in the ER.

“Score all the goals you can but maybe don’t celebrate like crazy when you’re up double digits” just seems like such a reasonable and common-sense take. The fact that it’s getting so much push-back is absolutely wild to me.

In Team USA’s first game they beat Thailand 13-0. Some people thought that the Americans over-celebrated some of their later goals in that win as scoring, say, the 10th goal over a much smaller and less developed program isn’t an incredible accomplishment and their celebrations came off as bad sportsmanship.

Yep. I’ve noticed this happening a few time already in the last year. I can’t exactly remember what it’s about, but they’ve been betting the farm on the wrong horse at least 3-4 times recently. It’s probably infectious like Kobe-brain.

The correct celebration when you score to put your team up 9, or 10, or 11, or 12, or 13-0.

Literally, yes.

It’s the most thin-skinned overreaction to the slightest criticism. “Hey, maybe tone down the celebrations when you’re up 10-0.”

Or, you know, something less over-the-rop than running with her arms out, spinning around twice, then going to the ground and kicking her legs in the air to celebrate a goal to go up 9-0.

There is literally nothing more important than being a true sport. Its literally the most important aspect of our culture that we owe to the English “Public” School ethos. To win without honor is literally worse then losing with a proper fair fight. Without sportsmanship sports is pure vulgarity.

“Actually, it’s good to be a dick when you’re beating the shit out of a clearly under-matched opponent” is the worst and weirdest take Deadspin has been flogging since they trotted out “The New Orleans Pelicans have some sort of, uh, moral duty (?) to trade Anthony Davis to the Lakers because that would be entertaining

This is next level Trump-style willful stupidity, like when he says he won’t fire Kellyanne Conway for violating the Hatch Act because “she’s very loyal.”
