I’ve never understood this approach—you’re buying the car for you, not for the next owner. ESPECIALLY if you’re buying this cheap to begin with.

Keep the car for 10 years instead of upgrading every 3 years, and you’ll be fine. Also, remember that sedans have lower cost of ownership because of better fuel economy, smaller tires and brakes, etc. I mean hell, that Jetta for example, how cheap can it depreciate? Even if it’s worth $5,000 in 3 years, then so what?
A $10k car can only depreciate $10k. Amortize that out over any ownership term longer than a couple years, and it’s pretty good.
Put it back together with just the necessary servicing and work on another V8 in the meantime. It won’t be undrivable and the spare V8 will be a much more manageable project than a whole truck sitting in your driveway with 75% of its innards strewn every which way. Those AMC V8s aren’t exactly worth their weight in…
