Oh god, quartering. *shiver*
Oh god, quartering. *shiver*
Seriously. I read the books after the first season and was so angry for how Daenerys's wedding night was handled.
I was not impressed by how they handled Daenerys’s post-wedding night experience. She just kept on as if nothing happened. But you’re right, we’ll see what they do. Either way they've seriously altered Sansa. At the end of the day I just don't like how rape is handled on this show.
But we're seeing the impact on Theon. I don't object to including rape in a story line, it happens to a significant percentage of women. It's how the show handles it. It's not shown as a big deal. Where's the emotional fallout? It's just shocking to be shocking.
I would agree if the aftermath of rape was shown. However, the show even cut out the one reference to what comes after (Lolys). Rape is shown but not what it does to a person. It’s treated like a way to increase the drama instead of an event that changes the character. If you write a rape scene and don’t reflect that…
I'm not sure to what you're referring I'm afraid.
Oh I get that completely. My issue isn't that sexual violence is portrayed in the show. It's _how_ it's portrayed vs. the books. The impact isn't shown. Martin avoided needing to by keeping it to side characters.
I would agree if they showed impact. Consider Daenerys. They made the wedding night much more of a clear rape and she just wants to find out how to sex him up better. That would have shattered her if it had happened that way. In the books you get the menace of rape, the prevalence, but Martin doesn’t take on what that…
In the books that scene is far more ambivalent. Thus a change in the show that is more sexually violent without showing the impact.
Huh. Well I guess I can see where that's coming from. What I meant is the casualness of rape on the show isn't something you'd generally see if women were more involved in the writing.
I guess I don’t like that rape is just cut and pasted like that. Those experiences fundamentaly change a person and they've not really reflected that. At least not as I've seen rape change women I know. Most of the rape in the books is incidental. We don't stay with those characters. The showrunners use it without…
Yes, I have. I'm talking about the changes made and who is raped. For instance, Daenerys's wedding night was much more gentle and Cersei want raped.
I see your point, but most of that was side characters. The show has been much more willing to use sexual violence against main characters.
It’s come to the point I can’t justify it any longer. Show vs. books, the show uses sexual violence much more on main characters as well as show only characters. Daenerys’s wedding night, way more rapey. Cersei being raped by Jaime. Roz. Now this. I find it frustrating and I'm losing faith in the show.
In general the show has been much more rape-filled than the books. Well, to main characters. I'm not surprised they're doing this. Though there are many nuanced female characters, you can still really tell that the show runners are white dudes.
You have beautifully articulated my feelings about racism and feminism. Thank you.
That seems like a rather narrow perspective on science. Given enough time I imagine that human beings will unravel all of our current mysteries ... And in doing so we will reveal even more questions. Humanity is a wild ride!
That's what really got me, too. Some time ago I read about a group of scientists figuring out a new method of freezing that kept it all a bit more intact. All I could think was "oh dear, those cryogenic folks are gonna be piiiissed ... or would have been if they found out about it. Which they won't because they…
I'm very hopeful that we're on our way to having a much more sane and rational approach to substance abuse in this country. The ever decreasing popularity of the War on Drugs in addition to the medical community _finally_ realizing that 12-Step based addiction treatment simply does not work for most people-these…
This is so rad. I will be making reservations as soon as they allow. Now, how to keep Mr. Downing from finding out about this development so that I may surprise him with the spookiest date ever!
