You cannot imagine how hard it is until you are living it. And the “controlling” behavior you describe is so much more complicated than an interpretation of domestic violence suggests. Enjoy your ignorance of being an Alzheimer’s caregiver, and pray you never learn. It devours families.

This is the fundamental difference between historical works published by a commercial press and those published by an academic press. Academic presses require peer review, and most academic authors run their work by other scholars via conferences, peer-reviewed article publications, and reading groups prior to ever

Two words: peer review.

What I just saw was a bunch of kids with bad manners. Children referring to a Senator as “Feinstein?” Uh-uh. It’s like they wanted her to waive a magic wand and fix climate change while they were standing there. I’m not defending Senator Feinstein’s policies, her handling of the encounter, or the intransigence of

Chaney, Schwerner, and Goodman.

Don’t go down the wormhole of this case unless you are prepared to ruin your day and shatter your faith in human decency. IT IS BEYOND AWFUL.

That town is evil. I lived there 11 years, and there is something evil in how so many seemingly good people can look the other way in the interest of maintaining Happy Valley’s lucrative reputation as a Brigadoon of Football and Binge Drinking for flush students and alums with deep pockets.

Law enforcement in the US is affirmative action for meatheads.

Agreed, this is terrible, and we don’t need anything else to make it harder for women to get an abortion or trans people to get healthcare. But, um, I don’t get the “doctors withholding gender reassignment surgery” part. It’s not like you get gender reassignment surgery from your primary care physician. And nobody

Read my comment above. It’s about whether weird ballots with extra marks on them count, and for whom. A 3-judge panel created the tie when they counted a ballot for the GOP that election officials had originally said was spoiled. This election was decided not by lots but by judges.

This. A million times this.

Btw, between 1971 and today, Virginia election law changed, creating the mandate to divine a voter’s intent. If nothing else, I hope this troubling episode results in a legislative remedy, ie, reversion back to the old standard that if you add extraneous marks to your ballot, it won’t count.

Yes. It seems like the rule should be, “If you mess up your ballot, it won’t count.” Not, “If you mess up your ballot, we’ll try to figure out what you meant and hope our unconscious biases don’t influence our interpretations.”

It’s not that simple. There was also a slash through Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie. From today’s WaPo: “The voter, whose identity is unknown, filled in bubbles on the paper ballot for Simonds and Yancey but also made a slanted mark across the Simonds bubble. That voter voted Republican in every other

No! A 3-judge panel determined this election just as much as the drawing today. Recall: The election was close, triggering a recount. The Democrat won the recount by 1 vote. Then the Republicans contested the result, saying a messed up ballot that marked both candidates but also had some other lines on it should have

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Brittanie_Cecil Brittanie Cecil got hit with a hockey puck at an NHL game and walked out of the stands under her own power, but died two days later. So there is no telling how seriously injured this child is. I take some comfort from the fact that she got hit in the face and not

One more thing: no-kill shelters are not heroic. They generally accept only dogs they deem “adoptable,” and if they get it wrong, they either refuse to euthanize an unadoptable dog or they adopt it out to some unwitting person who thinks they have the magic solution. I encourage people to support open shelters, which

Please understand that I don’t like her approach to dogs at all; the New Yorker essay’s cavalier discussion of the puppies made me want to scream. But, at the same time, I do believe it’s possible that the dog did not show aggression during the adoption process, and that it emerged later. Did Lena’s [lack of] care for

A hole more than a foot deep is a hazard for kids, is what I’m saying. You should qualify your post to include safety warnings, because people don’t actually pay attention to their kids at the beach, or you should take it down.
