I just did some reading on the Partition & one thing they tastefully underplayed was that in addition to all the murdering, many of the female refugees were abducted and raped. So by intentionally sacrificing himself to buy time for Umbreen and her mother to escape, he saved them from that possible horror as well.

Agreed completely, the story was both historically enlightening - so few outside of South Asia know about the tragedy and violence of the Partition - and relevant.

In addition to everything you’ve mentioned, and what you’ve mentioned is the most important part mind you, the show managed to solve (or at least not continue tripping into) its largest ‘flaw’. There were no loose ends. No threads left hanging. No ambiguous answers. A complete story.
