There is a bit of art to the gut punch deaths in the intro to Alien 3, but it makes it such a bleak story that there was really nowhere to go afterwards. (Though that can be a valid choice too.)
I agree with you. My only issue is that if Hicks existed, the prisoners (being Male) would have deferred to him because he’s a “soldier”. So in effect, Hicks becomes the lead character instead of Ripley.
