Sloppy Mechanics/Matt Happel FTMFW!

This is like what a 12 year old says when he thinks he’s being sophisticated.

Right on. Even Gordon, who is definitely the biggest goof-off on the ship, is an expert pilot that they don’t hesitate to trust when they need some serious piloting. He’s written as a goofy person who’s not automatically also incompetent. On the whole, the characters are far more well-rounded than I ever would have

Quite frankly it’s not Galaxy Quest at all except it is in space. Galaxy quest takes SciFi and makes fun of the people in SciFi, the tropes and the people who like SciFi. (Don’t get me wrong I love Galaxy Quest).

That’s what happened for me; the ending elevated not just the episode, but the entire series.

it’s what would happen if the people you work with on a daily basis were all now in charge of a spaceship. To me, it’s surprisingly realistic as to how people actually act around each other daily.

I was expecting a Galaxy Quest-esque show from the early promos, but it’s really TNG with dick jokes. While it’s not hard sci-fi, they do take that side of the show seriously. The more dramatic/serious aspects of the show usually win out, with the humour being the dressing. They’re not afraid to be serious and think

To those thinking “Family Guy *groan*”, I think you’re doing yourself a disservice. Give the show a chance, it has a bit of a bumpy start but I grew to really like it once it found it’s footing. To me it feels like a less serious TNG, in a good way.

You could always watch the episodes that feature the “secondary” characters as the main ones— “About a Girl” and “Firestorm” spring to mind— then make conclusions based on those viewings. Condemning something just because you hate one component of it... well, I can understand the reasoning, but if you might have liked

no, it is smart like star trek. made by people who like star trek. this is not a spoof, but a comedy. with smart plots, funny gags, gorgeous women, fucking amazingly nice ships. a great fucking show, not kidding.

That is the most accurate description so far.  A very real workplace sitcom that just happens to take place in space.  If anyone here has worked in an office (particularly a NOC/IT), they will appreciate the interpersonal relationships quite a bit more on the show.

I went into the first season with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised. Looking forward to S2.

Important to realize (to me, anyway) that the Orville is not a flagship like the various Enterprises, but a second- or third-level utility vehicle. Ed is constantly on the bubble, and they get the appropriate kind of missions. Imagine if Kirk or Picard could just relax a bit.

Now playing

I’ve always hated star trek, I REALLY like this show. It’s got just enough comic relief to not be too serious. It probably helps that I really like Seth’s comedy. Also, seth has long been obsessed with star trek:

Alara best girl.

This is one of those shows which is still trying to find a groove and in the meantime is throwing everything it can against the hull to see what will stick. If I didn’t know when these episodes aired I might assume it came from about 10 years ago. I’m going to give it a second season since there were flashes of Seth

I was very skeptical of this show when it started, but it really is a goddam delight.

Finally... actual Star Trek is back.... as opposed to action schlock STD.

This show has turned way better than I thought it would be, especially starting with the episode where Ed and Gordon infiltrated the Krill ship.

The Cupid’s Dagger episode were really creepy. He basically drugged and had sex with several characters and were not arrested.
