There seems to be several mis-understands in the comments so far. First, the police have no obligation to protect any individual and this has been ruled more than once by ccourts. They are only to enforce the laws after the fact. So, you can not rely on the police to provide protection from a bad guy.
I lived by myself in the country for a while. Having been through threats, violence and breakins before I was now armed and had completed a concealed carry course, which came with a complete rundown of gun laws and gun safety tips.
