There’s something about those old practical effects creations that are just more vivid and unsettling. Yeah they look ridiculous in a still, but seeing them moving around and interacting is unnerving in a way CGI hasn’t been for me. 

My wife and I have totally different wants out of horror. She likes gory slasher or zombie movies; I like atmospheric spooky movies like haunted house stuff. She can’t abide that, especially now that we have kids. So it’s always interesting this time of year finding a movie for us to agree on. In spite of all that…

Josh McDermitt just told the Walking Dead producers to get fucked and locked himself in his trailer, waiting for that phone call. 

“I hand over the money for my kombucha latte when I suddenly have a thought so powerful it stops me in my tracks. I realize that I really, really like Dawes.”

I know this is an overall positive review, but this line:
“NPR-style voice-over narration”
is almost TOO effective a critique. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

Valdez is a complete nonentity in the race. I’ve seen no ads for her at all. I’ve seen ads for the Lt Gov, AG, for Senators and House of Rep candidates, but not a peep from her campaign. I mean, I’m voting for her still but it’s really puzzling how little they are even trying. 

Clearly Gosling shouldn’t be allowed to be in an October release movie anymore.

That’s too bad about First Man. I saw it this weekend (in a near-empty IMAX theater, oof) and loved it. The Fox new controversy is, of course, bullshit and inaccurate, but I really hope that’s not why it’s not finding an audience. 

I’ve wondered that; from what I read of the film it is, but I’m not sure if anyone explicitly ever says Houston in it.

Rushmore is very seasonal looking, but the only problem is, set in Houston as it is, we don’t really have an autumn. Typically we get trees changing color about two weeks before Christmas, and it’s nowhere near as vibrant as in the movie.

There’s a couple long shots in the movie where you can see palm trees in the distance. 

It astounds me that they felt the need to reboot the whole series when Amazing Spider-Man could very easily have just been a fourth movie in the Raimi continuity, just do a James Bond on the lead and recast. ASM pretty much picks up elements left off in 3: Gwen Stacey was introduced, and Curt Connors was still kicking…

I more meant it just do 3 and 4 in very close succession to each other, shoot them simultaneously, like Back to the Future 2 and 3 did. So no, not a “Spider-Man 3 Part 1/Part 2" like HP did.

Woof. I never realized that 2007 was such a bad superhero movie year until I looked at the lineup like that. Which is weird because it was otherwise a really great movie year.

Of all the awful things this administration has done, surely getting people to side with anything about The View has to be the worst. WILL THIS NIGHTMARE NEVER END
