Roast chicken is a great start. The last time I showed someone how to do it, I ‘left’ my digital thermometer with them, as that is a really helpful tool to have around, especially with chicken. 

Same here. Lots of cooking shows growing up and chocolate chip cookies was the first thing I could actually make on my own and without starting a kitchen fire or sending people to the hospital for whatever reason.
