He’s only seeing the cynicism of the studio because he can only think cynically. He doesn’t think that maybe, just maybe, the people creating the movie could be emotionally invested in the characters enough to want to do right by them because he’s a cynic.

Why is fan-service such a bad thing again? The fan-service in this instance was character-related at least. I care far more about the characters in this universe than the action scenes they are involved in, so if this movie gave me more time to spend with those characters, and the time was earnest, why is that bad?

You’ll probably understand it, but it will be far less emotionally resonant and maybe a little boring and pointless to you throughout much of it.
