That is not why this clothing is being destroyed: as Newsweek reported last year, charities are having trouble giving this clothing away, and many are ending up shredding it because even the poorest people in the poorest parts of the world are rejecting these clothes.

It has nothing to do with that, do some research. Charities are actually REJECTING clothing right now because they have too much: Newsweek did a piece on this last year. Even people in the poorest, most oppressed parts of Africa are actually turning down American clothing donations.

Policies like this exist for several reasons, the foremost of which is to prevent black market dealing out of the back alley (often by employees.) Home retailers like Pier 1 do this too. Another major reason is exclusivity—can’t have the poors looking like folks. Either way, it’s a shitty rationale.
