Of course they need an exact number, but they could have determined that exact number and ramped up production after seeing how quickly the preorders went and how quickly retailers went through stock for the NES Classic. Instead, they cut production long before meeting demand.

I don’t have exact figures, but “enough” would be something even remotely close to meeting demand. “Enough” would be giving most people a chance to preorder one, or if not that then actually having a chance to see one on a shelf in a store a few months after release, or being able to go to Amazon or Best Buy or…

The common theme should be that Nintendo needs to actually make enough of these so that people who don’t have to have it on the first day can actually buy one later without having to pay a scalper on eBay 6x the MSRP.
