I live in SW Europe and it was initially a big struggle for me to get full-time work. I thought about going back to the U.S. for a while but at this point there’s no fucking way. I’d much rather take my chances here.

Yes. She has anxiety and depression for which she goes to therapy and takes meds and has needed surgery and physical therapy to remove a bunch of cartilage that was hanging out in her joints for no reason whatsoever, and then recover. So she’s quite worried about getting health care more than anything else.

That’s terrible. People always look at someone like that and say they’re like not socially adept or whatever but the reality is that it happens to lots of perfectly normal, even accomplished people. It’s just whether you’re at the right place and time and such. So sad.

She just had her resume revamped by someone who does that. I’m hoping it helps, she’s so sad. I’m so bummed for her.

I think I will NOT send this on to my friend who is at the end of postdoc contract 3 at the age of 39 with no employment options in sight and who will be out health insurance and rent money within a couple months, 12 years of post-secondary education or not. It seems...strangely unhelpful.
