Android users are not notified automatically even if they have the app. They have to first suspect they are being tracked, then open the app, and then manually do a scan for nearby AirTags.

Yeppers, Gizmodo had a piece posted about it a few days back. Probably a very good idea to have it installed if you’re driving a commonly targeted vehicle, or live in areas where this sort of thing has been happening.

Apple just released an app for Android users so they, too, can be notified of AirTags they may not be aware of.
