I love that there’s a new Tomicarama set after so long! But wow, have you seen the prices on the old Tomicaramas on eBay? I paid what seemed like a ridiculous amount for one of the gas stations roughly 2 years ago - around $100, if I recall correctly. Now, a preowned one is $349! Some of the new condition sets are Read more

Ahh... I see.

My thoughts exactly. Lloyd Center is planning a remodel, so any vestiges of the mall that were achingly modern in the 60s are probably not going to be around much longer, but I hope this shop survives.

There have to be a few of us... someone has to be buying all of the non-fantasy cars from our local megastores, because I seldom find anything good. I’ve only found one Treasure Hunt, ever, at the Fred Meyer on Burnside, of all places...

Lloyd Center is an odd place. There are multiple renderings of its future modernization, but I appreciate the historic photos of the mall in its 60s prime. Read more

I have no idea where this stuff came from. Did they buy out a long-closed toystore’s inventory? Or has this shop existed since the 90s, with its battered boxes gathering dust due to high prices?

Yes! The prices were extreme, even with the posted discounts (50% on 1/64, $10 on the 1/18s.

I shall try to take some photos and write a review. This is one of the models I’ve wanted for a long time, but they are so expensive on eBay ($30+ shipped). This one was about $8 on Taobao (before shipping). Interestingly enough, the buying agent flagged it as “imitated goods”. (You can still purchase/ship “imitated Read more

Interesting. When I was shopping in 2016, the best rate came from a credit union I hadn’t actively banked with in years - 1.74%, if I recall. I told the salesperson that I would be using that credit union’s financing, and they said, “hang on, we can beat that.” Ended up with 0%/60mo on a current-year exec demo with 3k Read more

Yeah, there isn’t really car culture there (unless it’s Korean-made and white/silver/black, or the occasional Mini) so maybe toy cars are less popular with kids? Read more

I didn’t see any Hyundais. After that Artbox visit, I checked out a couple other Artbox stores, but only the first one had Tomicas....

Oh, and there have to be plenty of companies or schools disposing of hundreds of these boxes... but currently on eBay the boxes are expensive...perhaps it’s like my workplace, where things like power and VGA cables go straight into the trash...

Awesome. :-) keep it as long as you can, stay on top of essential maintenance, ignore any expensive and complicated convenience repairs (for me, that’s the sunroof cables/guides that means $500+ parts and pretty much disassembling the interior), and try to put on a sympathetic face in 5-10 years when your friends are Read more

Nice, congrats! Since you mentioned only being able to drive 1 passenger in the comments, I’m guessing you’re pretty young? If so, you made a great choice; older Japanese luxury cars tend to be both reliable and feature-laden. When I bought my first car in college, everyone tried to tell me to buy a newer basic car Read more
