Governments should try to save their money since they have none, and save the BS crayon purchases for parents.

My mother grew up here during World War II (she was born in 1941). There are a few pics that she still has - one is of her as an infant with my grandma and grandpa with a security clearance tag pinned on her swaddling blanket.

When I worked for NASA-Ames in the early 2000's, I did tours for their "Mars Center" and discussed Geology on the moon and Mars. We had a moon rock on display for the public, but in off hours it was kept in a vault deep inside the federal air base (past two checkpoints and card and password encrypted security). Some

Thanks for the comments!

I think there's a way, through Netflix, to make it so you aren't streaming in HD (which limits the amount of data your phone consumes). Might want to look into that if AT&T are still being douchey later on. If you're still upset at AT&T when your phone plan ends, you can always move to Sprint, where you won't have

For those of us who use desktop computers (I'm a graphic designer who uses a 27" iMac with a Wacom), this change is not welcome. Most of my colleagues did not upgrade past 10.6.9, and I regret upgrading to Lion. Mountain Lion is pushing those of us who need the desktop interface into a corner. Why are they abandoning

We have these in Oregon for Tsunami warnings, and the one in Cannon Beach usually moos at us (weekly). It's much better than a scary air-raid siren. Of course, the actual siren plays if there's a real emergency.

I really hope the optical drive doesn't go away. I use my laptop for mobile gaming (mostly Sims 3 and other EA games - I don't use Steam), but those require DVDs to install and play. Yes, it's antiquated, but I don't want to be on a 12 hour plane ride with no Sims. I've done the no optical drive thing with my

Does anyone know whether Windows 8 will JUST be like the pictures we've seen, or will it have an option to keep the desktop feel of Windows 7?

Exactly! Japanese people take baths (and share the water!) everyday. Take a shower first, and if you're worried about water consumption, then get a hand-held showerhead with a pause button to turn off the water while you're scrubbing and washing. Baths are the best :D

It's better that she learn the hardships of academic publishing now. Scientific publishing, for me, was a rude awakening.

We could do away with all of this ridiculousness if the country just went to a national primary. It's not like we don't have the technology for one, and it would save us from the multitudes of "debates" (ie: televised whining) that the GOP presidential hopefuls have shoved down our throats for the last several months.

Yes! That's where the Pacific plate subducts under the North American plate. That's a very active plate margin, and if earthquakes weren't there, then the Earth is broken (and geophysicists everywhere would cry).

We're fine. The waves are so small here that little to no damage has been done. The southern coast of Oregon had larger waves than the northern coast.

Don't forget Google Mars, Google Moon, and Google Universe.

Oh, if only I had the money, this entire list would live in my kitchen. Of course, I would probably never leave the house except to buy more coffee, and may die of a caffeine overdose. (Maybe it's good I can't afford them!)

This map, while marginally thought-out, has many, many errors, and makes many assumptions that would most likely never pan out. As a geophysicist, I do not endorse the idea of a map like this. It only serves to panic the uninformed.

@Jeremy David Thomson: Yeah, but that caldera is due for an eruption. And when it does, the world is out of luck.

@DanKrouse: Thank you for explaining the process honestly. These videos were over the top, yes, but sometimes what seems gruesome to us is the safest, kindest thing to do. (Butterball's video was inexcusable, though).
