That was a really neat video. That’s some skynet, though.

Do Tales from the Borderlands. I was really disappointed by Vesperia. Depending on how much time you’ve already dumped into it you minus well just finish it up but boy is it just the safest thing on the planet. Borderlands is a stupidly fun romp through and through.
I’ve seen this echoed in many other peoples’ comments and I think it needs to be said - PC users want FEWER launchers. I’m relatively new to the PC market, only really investing in a gaming PC within the last year, and already I have origin, steam, uplay and GoG. It’s absurd that every time I want to play a game, a…
That is rad. So. Rad.
I’ve had multiple arguments with multiple folks about the viability of mods to save games and I’ve come to the conclusion that mods are absolutely essential to some games, but they shouldn’t be required. I love minecraft vanilla, and the mods only enhance what’s already there. My hope for No Man’s Sky is that that…
It’s the best decision either way. The only games I’ve bought at launch in the past year were Witcher 3, Fallout 4, and MGS V, all for the PC. MGS V is the only that that really feels fundamentally similar to release, barring some of the add-on stuff and MGO that have come out since. The balancing and performance…
I’d love to hear some others’ opinions on the music of FFXIII. I’ve only played the first one from that trilogy, but I absolutely hated the music. I knew it wasn’t Uematsu, and it sounded a lot like someone trying to copy his style but without any of his finesse. The scores to the earlier final fantasies are all…
Bless his sweet, southern heart.
Based on an earlier Kotaku article I’ve started turning off the minimap for so many recent games and I’ve found I’m really enjoying my experience with these games so much more. Not only am I learning the geography of these large places better, but it feels a lot more “natural” as a character. Using the Witcher 3 for…
They have the added benefit of not defining tonality either, so you can and most composers often will create stacks of 4ths and 5ths to build up to the primary theme. Think that fanfare just before the Star Wars theme. 6ths are fantastic, but they define tonality just as much as a third does (don’t forget that a minor…
Even then! Ubisoft’s last couple of games have had a much better working:not working ration. Syndicate ran pretty well out of the gate and Far Cry 4 was damn near fine. I’ll never trust Warner Bros. again, unless they decide to make a Shadow of Mordor 2: Gollum Boogaloo
Oh god if you love the LotR score, check out the Johan de Meij symphony it was largely based off of. All 5 movements are great in their own way, especially Gollum, but I posted this here just for reference to your video.
It’s a really great theme, and a lot of the music from this series had some really cool stuff. This piece is really evocative of a lot of things Kirk wrote above, but a lot of what it comes down to is the “do-sol” relationship that is so often used to evoke the hero. What’s neat about this theme, and the way it…
Fifths (and by extension, fourths) are dominant interval movements that move chord changes aurally stronger than other. Think of a major third rising or descending. Not all that “oomph”, so to speak. But put in that “sol-do” interval and bam you’ve got a full fledged phrase written and done in two notes. Do this…
I attended a master class with this guy, whose name is really escaping me, who worked on the music for Batman, Jaws, E.T. and a few other big blockbuster movies. Essentially he was in charge of orchestration, though it got a little more finicky than that in some cases. I’ll never forget what he said about working with…
As a lifelong New Englander, I was super stoked by the idea of Boston, but I am super disappointed at how small the actual city feels. Now that they’re taking us further north to Bar Harbor, I can’t help but think they could have used something else? Don’t get me wrong, Maine is the shit, but going further into the…
Way too true, but you have to get them credit where it’s due. Yes the games are largely broken, but it’s just a great toolset for the modding folks to work with. They haven’t even released GECK yet and there’s tons of mods floating around that really expand on what’s there. Can’t wait to see some Falksar-level…
Honestly? Search up ones that alter settlement stuff. Homemaker is a great starting point, but the snap n build series is really quite good if you’re really OCD about structure placement. Armorsmith extended is great if even just for the ability to wear any armor and still have the additional sets on top. There’s one…
Now’s a good time to hop back in. I played through the main campaign at launch and had a little fun. Now, months later, I’ve modded the game to hell and back and am playing through again on a fresh character and am having the time of my life. Feels more like a Bethesda game now, to be honest.
That’s a complaint I often see of Dragon’s Dogma, but I think having the consistent spawns and mobs is a blessing. A lot of the late and end game can be a ton of grinding to get materials and knowing where a particular monster is can be super helfpul when you need that 3x Black Freakish Claw.
