I’ve often wondered how some kind of a modern mill would do in a Porsche 944 shell- even with the old 80s 4-banger, the early models are down around 2700lbs. A quick search suggests that the stock mill (fully-assembled and with all the parts included) is about 360lbs, give or take. That 1L Ecoboost tips in at just

Sadly, this is also the case with 944s... Just because the car only cost $5k doesn’t mean you won’t need to put actual money in it to keep it on the road.

Reminds me of when my wife’s old AMD-powered HP laptop died oh those many years ago, and she had to buy an insulated coffee mug because the replacement didn’t put off enough heat to keep it warm. Thing might as well have been a freaking hot-plate.

Two words for you. Smash Bros.

Yup, made the trek up to the upper trailhead for Gray’s and Torrey’s Peaks a few years back in a 1999 BMW 528iT (e39s FTW). Not that you can see it from this picture, but the road is dirt, washboard at best, and giant ruts and rocks at it’s worst. If it’d been muddy, we’d never have made it, though.

I do love me the Lamy Safari... To be fair, I have a soft spot for that pen because it’s the one that helped me re-learn my writing grip and stop cramping up because I was doing it wrong! The Safari kind of gently yet forcefully adjusts your grip into something much more manageable.

I don’t know that they’ve ever actually required a garbage disposal, but the disposal is the common connection method because you need an air gap in the drain line in order to not have the potential for a drain backup to dump sewage into your dishwasher. If you don’t have a disposal, you need an air gap installed up

Generally-speaking, I absolutely agree. However, they are perhaps the best shoes known to mankind for small children. No matter what the hell your kid got into, you can count on the Crocs to come clean. And honestly, it’s not like they look any worse than most of the garish crap made for kids.

Honestly, I’d buy a small, 12V DC air compressor, and just put it in the car. There’s usually enough room around the spare tire under the trunk floor in most passenger cars for a compressor and jumper cables.

Umm, no. Aside from the space issue, half the convenience of a pegboard system is that you can grab and replace tools one-handed.

Agreed, former e39 owner here as well. Though w/ the i6 models I had, it was all the fiddly bits that didn’t work- engine/drivetrain were solid. As I understand it, the V8 models didn’t fare quite so well.

Yup, didn’t need them in Indiana, but here in Colorado, you do. Only the back plate gets the stickers here, though.

Just not an e39, which is what I learned in. Stock form has a clutch delay valve that obscures the actual engagement point on the pedal, combined with muted responses and a quiet cabin means it’s a rough time. On the plus side, it’s hard to stall the 6-cyl model, and the cabin really is a pleasant place to be.

Thanks for the info! I guess at this point I’m really just biding my time until a really spectacular drop-in LED unit is reasonably priced. Thankfully, my 944 uses 7" units that basically match what goes in a number of recent Jeep models, so the chances of a solid aftermarket unit are pretty decent.

Seems like you’ve probably got maybe another 2-3 years at most on the price front- the 968s have started climbing at least a bit in the past maybe 5 years or so, and the S2s and 951s are starting to show signs of doing the same. The NAs are pretty slow by modern standards, so their values have tended to lag behind the

You bet!

Oh hell, I’ve turned into ‘that car guy’ that won’t shut up and give a short answer to anything...

Generally speaking, pretty good all-around. There are a good half-dozen or more larger suppliers/distributors where you can get the majority of parts you’d want, and most of the time you can get stuff overnighted if you’re in a bind. Just don’t expect to be able to get new parts locally. Something breaks, you can all

Well, if you end up seriously looking at 944s, drop me a line. They’re pretty freaking awesome. (Have one as a daily, and have a few others over the past 11 years)

Go buy a 944. Or an Impreza, or yet another fucking Miata. Whatever. It’s totally worth it.
