Not addressing a leaking oil cooler on my 1987 944 Turbo. I knew it was leaking, but didn’t realize just how much it would leak once things got up to temperature on a 2-1/2 hour trip on the highway after going to full synthetic oil. Topped off the oil before I left, but once everything got nice and warm, things went

Assuming that the rest of the hoses had been replaced on the e39 I bought with a lot of replacement cooling system parts. The expansion tank and radiator are common failure points on these cars, and I had documentation of their replacement on this car prior to when I bought it. Turns out there were several additional

So what you’re telling me is that Finland really is as redneck as Steve’N’Seagulls would have us believe?

Sounds a lot like the e39 BMW I learned to drive stick in- BMW’s “brilliant” (/s) solution to cut down on drivetrain lash and who knows what else was the so-called “clutch delay valve”, which literally interferes with the hydraulics at the slave cylinder so that you can’t dump the clutch.

Man, we’ve never had issues with the window regulators at all (unlike the e39s that seem to eat them on the regular), but now I guess I can add that to my list of anxieties...

Oh, believe me, I’m not saying mk4s are good cars on the whole, just that this particular one happened to be!

I’ve become increasingly convinced that my wife got literally the only good mkIV Golf on the planet... TDi, just shy of 300k on the clock, and it’s needed all of about $1k in maintenance aside from tires and oil changes. Still gets fuel economy in the mid 40s, still pulls just like it was new (not fast, but enough to

I was able to set up 2FA on my Twitch account about 20 minutes ago with no issues, so if you haven’t tried again, I’d give it another shot.

I’d bet that the availability of parts for these cars in 10-15 years or so will be rough, though. If you think it’s expensive now, just wait until you’re paying 3-4x due to lower availability.

Well put- there are several gems from any given time period that have held up better than the rest, and those are still fantastic, but aesthetics aside, most stuff from any given previous decade is going to be objectively worse than the stuff that followed it.

I daily a 1987 944 Turbo and love it, and have a 1999 528iT

It was pretty rare to start with and even harder to find now, but I’d also argue that the touring/wagon version of the e39 looks even better than the sedan- it’s just a little bit aggressive yet still understated.

They’re absolutely amazing cars- I’ve never so much as sat in a 911, but I’ve had a string of 944s over the years, finally settling on a 1987 944 Turbo as my current daily driver. The 944 has the advantage of having always been sort of the ‘black sheep’ of the Porsche world, so you don’t get hardly any of the

Sounds a lot like my experience with the exhaust on a 1984 944 I had a few years back. After some welds failed on the stock muffler, I decided that was the perfect chance to go to a more ‘sporty’ sounding exhaust. Which, even with the cat still in place, was *really fucking loud*. It sounded amazing for the first like

I mean, it did years ago, but current-gen bluetooth sounds just fine.

What’s even better is swapping in an aftermarket 3-piece crossmember- saves a *pile* of time for a whole lot of different repairs on the 944. Still kicking myself for not just biting the bullet and putting one in the last time I had to do a job that required pulling said crossmember...

There was bound to be *something* in an e39 that’s not a miserable PITA to repair...

I feel pretty certain that’s the answer to literally 99% of Claire’s “Should you...” food articles.

Get a schedule (for feedings, naps, diapers, etc.) and STICK TO IT. Both kids (can’t speak for more than two, because we have twins so that’s what I know) stay on the same schedule, period. Your chance to get literally anything done or get any measurable sleep is dependent on when both are asleep or happily awake and

This is absolutely my question. You’re still in the whole ‘time vs. money’ discussion, but if you’re doing things yourself, it’s hard to argue with the cost vs. a turnkey property in virtually every situation I’ve encountered.

And the turnkey stuff tends to have just as much crap break on you anyhow.
