Forgot this one, which is another favorite- Talked to the parts desk at our local VW dealer, who told me they didn’t have X part that I needed in stock, but they could have it in a week. Told them no thanks, but could I get the part number so I don’t have to hunt for it next time?

Reminds me of calling my local Porsche dealer’s parts desk:

I can’t decide if that was a dig at Aston Martin depreciation, or at Verizon’s eye-wateringly expensive cell service...

Agreed for the most part- where this totally makes sense is to remove the stupid dealer emblem crap. Where I bought the car isn’t something that I care to advertise.

I think the craziest thing that could come out of this is discovering that we’re not all the unique snowflakes we thought... Many of us share the same brain-damaged outlook on motoring, and like the same weird cross-section of crap.

It’s funny, I’m actually finding that I prefer the early interior now. I don’t know what got me there exactly, but there’s a simplicity to it (aside from the %&#*%&* heating/cooling controls...) that I’m finding I really appreciate.

Turbo and S2 models are starting to creep up, esp. low-mileage examples, but not too fast yet. Upkeep is a bit pricey, but if you can wrench for yourself, it’s very manageable. Biggest tip I can say is to do it right the first time (OE or equivalent-quality parts, and don’t skip stuff that ought to be replaced WYIT

Where it really differentiates itself from the 924 is in the post-refresh models (85.5 and later), especially the turbo and S2 variants. Lots of changes to things like the control arms and other suspension components there that make a pretty big difference overall. That said, I drive an 84 and love the stripped-down,

Those poor people in the backseat... The only people that fit in the backseat of a 944 are my 5-year-old twin daughters. They think it’s awesome, because it’s like it was made for them, but it’s going to suck in another couple years when they don’t fit anymore.

You must have a later model (or at least an 85.5)... I have two adjustments on my 84- fore/aft and recline. It’s a damned good thing the driving position works well for me...

Agreed- another 944 daily driver here!

One of these 4 methods is actually worth doing- i.e. using a drill guide. Every so often, you hit a spot in a project where you can’t use a drill press, or you don’t have the space for one, or you can’t justify the cost of the press when you’ll use it maybe 4 times for the entire project. I had a scenario that met two

Agreed!

Exactly. Heck, $3k can get you a 944 that runs well but has cosmetic issues, or a stunner w/ mechanical issues. But run like hell from a rusty one, or if you don’t enjoy wrenching...

Not if you do your homework, and pass on about 90% of the 944s out there. They’re not the most common car in the world, but there are enough of them that you can do it right without spending $5k in extra over the next year.

You are a lucky bastard. I have yet to have an A/C recharge kit actually work on a car...

Make sure to do a check online for either a general how-to for your car’s brakes, or check into a model-specific forum before doing a brake job- There are a good number of cars that just use the regular rear brake calipers in lieu of a separate parking brake, and will require a special tool to retract the rear

Colorado is pretty awesome for this as well- you can get basically anything over-the-counter here (edibles included), and it was a real game-changer for a friend of mine battling the side effects of chemotherapy to treat a brain tumor. While there is still some distinction between medicinal and recreational products,

I’ve found it useful as a companion to Google Maps. They both have strengths...
