I think that’s Lindsay Lohan’s mom
Yay. A day celebrating the anniversary of something I didn’t give two shits about at the time.
why can’t white girls wear dreads again? i keep forgetting.
Black people (Rastafarians) culturally appropriated dreadlocks and the very word “ganja” from Indian Hindu Shiva worshippers, so why should I give a shit? If anyone should be mad, it should be Shiva worshippers. Shiva worshippers in India had dreadlocks and “ganja” for thousands of years before black people ever stole…

Does it matter how you achieve dreadlocks? In the end, it’s dreadlocks. And no dreadlocks aren’t edgy fashionable and cool on white people. I associate them with dirty hippies. Not exactly cool or fashionable. And no black people didn’t invent them, sorry to tell you that. If that goes against your idea that somehow…
I think his response is pretty awful, but there are plenty of white cultures that have traditionally had dreadlocks. So, again, while his response was awful the criticism (that white people can’t wear dreads) is also pretty awful.
Being upset over a hair style seems like weird priorities when it comes to things that are oppressive or racism. Creativity pulls from all walks of life, dis-including them could easily be read as being excluding. Especially hair stylists who are creative and do all kinds of looks, they would want to be able to…
I live in Northern California, and there is a solid percentage of the white population that has dreads. Are the potheads appropriating? I can’t figure out where the line is on this one. I mean, your average white-guy dreads look terrible, so I judge anyway, but what’s the social justice angle?
Thank you. It’s cute how the 24 year olds writing this bullshit think they actually know anything.
Isn’t that cute? The bandwagon has turned its sights on hair now. On fucking hair. For fucks sake it is HAIR.
This is Jezebel, where cultural appropriation is defined in absolutely arbitrary and ridiculous term devoid of any grounding in facts or common sense or history or context. It’s cultural appropriation as defined by millennial Bernie supporters having a tantrum.
What culture is being appropriated exactly? Many ancient cultures wore dreads, including Greeks.
It’s so fuckin hilarious to watch you libtards eat your own!
I don’t think this is one of those fights people should start. Doing the cultural appropriation or “we invented that, you can’t use it” angle is going to result in some pretty hurt feelings with African Americans. As in “Hey, you can’t do that, we invented baggy jeans.”
In college, in the 90's, I had white “hippy” friends who had real dreads. I’ve never really thought of the dirty hippy dready look as appropriation. But when rich “celebrity/fashionistas/designers” add fakes ones as a fashion statement, yeah, it is. But also, people just didn’t make a big deal about appropriation back…
I don’t get it either, and I’m black. I know LOTS of white people who rock dreads. When did they become black-only?
Which is to say white people are afforded the range of motion to adopt black hairstyles such as dreads and rows
In the mid-80s, around the time Jacobs was working at Charivari and being a club kid, there was a trend of hair extension weaves in the clubs. It came over from London and the “Hard Times” look promulgated by Vivienne Westwood and others (as seen on Boy George, Hayzee Fantayzee, and other groups of that moment). They…
I get that he has a history of cultural appropriation, but I don’t see how this is that - dreadlocks have been found in countless cultures all over the world.
