Speak for yourself. American Beauty came out at the height of the late-90's boom, as did Fight Club. At that time, these were the only two voices against the go-go materialism that was at its crazy height.

I didn’t take each plot point as being the point of the movie. I took both movies as vehicles to get certain

I had more empathy for Annette Bening but it didn’t make me hate Kevin Spacey. The main thing I didn’t like about the movie was who turned out to be the killer at the end but that didn’t ruin the movie for me.

Me too.

I agree completely—but the vast majority of my peers hated the movie because they thought it glorified the midlife crisis. As for Annette Bening, I don’t think the movie made her out to be a bitch at all. I think for one thing the music, and for another thing, the camera, made me stop in my tracks during the scene

I’m old so...

Old-timer here again...I do not remember any use of the “N” word on TV in the 70's, and I watched every episode of Archie Bunker.

Frances McDormand says it quite a few times in “Three Billboards,” each time when accusing the police of brutality. The problem for me was that the audience laughed each time. I guess it was nervous laughter, but the laugh instead of a shocked gasp was very uncomfortable for me.

Are you sure? At the time, I read a critique of an “All in the Family” episode where they said “Jig****o” instead. I do not remember the “N” word. The critique was to the effect that they were trying to make Archie “lovable” by not using the word Archie would really say.

Lifelong liberal here. Saying that up front because I’m about to get pilloried for what I have to say.

What’s the difference between what happened to Grace and what happened to Paula Jones?

I’ve never in my life heard of any grad student getting room and board either.

Here’s what they do where I work. I have a pretty good job at a large well-known corporation that has had five or more rounds of layoffs over the last few years. I have seen the people with the most health problems laid off, although I don’t know for sure if the sick people got the ax on purpose. Anyway. Those of us

I think the idea was he was cooking something overnight?

That’s a great idea!!!
