My guess is that the 68 degrees is a generic recommendation for people in cooler climates who overheat their homes. I know several women, for example, who crank up the heat and then complain of hot flashes that keep them awake at night. Our bodies change based on what we’re used to. I agree on the darkness, but even room darkening shades are not enough given the set up of my windows. I’ve found that draping a folded dark t-shirt or towel over my forehead, eyes, and cheeks works wonders. You’d think it would fall off but it doesn’t. Blindfolds didn’t work for me, though.

In the winter months 68 degrees is way too warm for me. I wear warm clothes and use blankets. I keep the thermostat between 60 and 62 for sleeping at night. Not only does this feel better, it’s better for my pocketbook and the environment, too.
