As someone who was fairly lukewarm on the HP books, I found Rowling an excellent author to watch the development of. The first HP book was the work of a clear amateur with some interesting but half-considered ideas (I'm pretty sure a later Rowling would not have made Quidditch make so little sense).

If you want to hear Jon Blow be…well, a blowhard, there was an extended profile/puff piece/hagiography of him in The Atlantic a few months back.  It's a weird piece, since most gamers already know of Braid and most non-gamers will not be convinced that a game designer is one of mankind's greatest geniuses (according

If you're on AVClub, you prefer Community to BBT.  Q.E,mf.D.  You also hate Scrubs, hate Bob Seeger and Bon Jovi when you can be arsed to think about them, love Regina Spektor but worry that she's overproduced (and hate the people who only just now realize that she's become overproduced), make the occasional Dawes

Marvel and DC can't resist enabling easy jokes whenever a superhero comes out.  This is the flaming GL, and Northstar (and his sister) were faeries back around the time when seemingly every mutant turned out to also be a Valkyrie or a queen of a hell dimension or some damn thing.  I think they retconned that little

I don't think anybody in this thread would disagree with that (several posters above make the same point).  "Raising awareness" is the very definition of slacktivism.  As always, Wonderella says it best: http://nonadventures.com/20…

I've got issues with SGKF myself so I'm not defending them, but I should put in a word for charities and their 'administrative fees'.  It's easy to see what a non-profit's "cut" is and think that it's wasteful, or that 100% of donations to world hunger should go to actually buying food for the poor, but once a

Thank you!  You're like some sort of nerd-culture angel, and I thank each of your twenty sides.
