This is exactly what is behind a lot of the push to classify cheer as a sport in schools. If you had been participating in a recognized sport you would have been required to have proper safety equipment.

I would love to see the competitive cheer stuff (which is more a combo of dance and gymnastics) turn into a separate sport from the sideline stuff (actually leading cheers) and locker decorating type stuff.

Part of the push for “sport” recognition (at least in schools) is because then coaches will be required to have safety training and to follow stricter safety regulations. That’s interesting. In my area it is the religious right folks that are trying to sway the school board vote. They care enough to turn out on off years when most moderate folks can't be bothered.
