The other thing too is that they are not “pretty”; they are big, battered males and not cute and fluffy, and a lot of people can’t see past the chewed up ears to the sweet personality. They are my kinda cats, actually, but I live nowhere close (in another country), so I can’t adopt them.

I’m so sorry you have been going this. It’s so easy to become accustomed to situations that are unhealthy for us; I’ve heard it said that we can become used to anything, given enough time, and that any situation can come to feel “normal”.
