I was legitimately surprised that Eva Rebuild ended so well. In Japan, it originally aired on cable, which few Japanese people had, and about half the episodes never aired due to content concerns. However, it did become a cult classic, which is why Watanabe was able to get the movie done as well as go on to do stuff like Samurai Champloo and Space Dandy.
