For a good while, I've been trying to put my finger on why exactly Vandal Savage came off as oily, smarmy, and sneering instead of threatening, cool, and insidious. And I think that I've figured it out.
The remake with Ethan Hawke, Lawrence Fishburn, and Gabriel Byrne was surprisingly good as well.
