A week prior to your epic journey, the family & I undertook a similar round trip (AR to CA and back via MO, KS, CO, WY, UT, NV), albeit in a car 40 years newer and mostly via Interstate. It was pure, unadulterated misery. My hat is off to you and your vehicle for your perseverance.

I used to run the 255/75/17 KM2's from those on my 4Runners until I went 285/75. I’d buy the take offs, sell the wheels for $250 or so, and have a set of 5 brand new tires for $250-450 depending on what I paid for the set to begin with. Can’t beat it.

I’m a 3rd gen 4Runner apologist, having owned a handful. My daily driver clocking in at 357k miles and counting on it’s original driveline and I just went ~100 miles on dirt this past weekend w/zero issues, so if you want something unbiased, you’re not going to find it here.

With the folding windshield on the new JL being much less of a production than it was on the JK (and, basically, every wrangler since it became a CJ), I’ve seen a ton of people with it folded down (asterisk: a ton compared to the one I’d seen ever, in my life, prior to the JL... courtesy of Andrew Collins’ article…

Ranked best in it’s class since it was introduced in 2010 (tied in 2018). And the GX470 before that. KBB and ALG also share JD Power’s opinion.

Before we bought our 2016 4Runner, we looked hard at a few CPO GX460s. At the time, the price points were a bit higher on the GX (high $30's), and our 4Runner Trail (AKA TRD Off Road in 2017+ parlance) ended up costing us just north of $35k after fees.

I’m at 357k miles on mine. Wouldn’t have any issues taking it across the country & back tomorrow. 350k is attainable.

They redesigned what? the infotainment? 

Have you given any thought to a GX460? V8, same platform, nicer interior, better gearbox, reasonable depreciation. Higher price point and awful Toy-lexus corporate “predator” grille in the later versions... but a CPO can be had without it.
