Sorry man, didn’t mean to be a dick or imply you didn’t know what you were doing. My brain is in work/photography mode when I look at character shots and I try to imagine how I’d go about shooting it - I didn’t mean to be negative.

And for what it’s worth, when I back light subjects it’s just enough (about thirty percent of the key) to create an outline of their physical shape, and in this case I would have done it from directly behind the subject so their bodies covered the speedlight but kept the perspective ambient light in check.
