For that price (or less, if you know what to look for and where) you can find a Mark III, which is supreme in every single way, IMO. Looks better, cleaner, and has a powerful V8 that’s not choked to death.

Same. And know a few looking for Crosstours, again, in a futile effort to find one in good shape with low mileage and at a decent price. I see them (in my city) going for 20K+ and they have nearly 200K on them...
Agree with most of this list. The Crosstour gets me though. I remember really hating this thing passionately when it came out, because it was neither a wagon, a sedan, or an SUV. It was a mishmash of all kinds of concepts.
The 2021-present Outback has this same exact issue. Seriously, it was either a big fucking mirror blinding me, or I couldn’t see the screen at all, or both.
It’s a freak, and I like it (coming from someone who never thought about owning a Hyundai). It’s quirky, and I see a lot of Baja/Brat influence here. I won’t compare it to the either of them, but part of its soul is a callback to both of them. We need more quirky vehicles like this; kudos to Hyundai for trying…
Surprised the 3800 didn’t make the list. Not because it was a sophisticated or special engine, but because it powered every W-body (and a bunch of other stuff, including the Regal GSX) and it is known for its reliability and tolerance for major mods, whether it be supercharging or turbocharging.
I can’t put my finger on it, but the original Countach still looks like a fucking spaceship anywhere it parks. And the new concept just doesn’t catch that magic; at all, really. I mean, just look at that back window, the way it slopes inward, and the MASSIVE intakes on each side... needs that craziness.
It’s nice... I guess. I mean I don’t hate it, looks cool.
Holy shit man.
This feels like a surprisingly-sobering PSA. I’ll keep that in mind if I’m down there.
Honestly I wouldn’t have even gotten this far reading into it.
1st gear: North American leadership on EVs sucks ass; both in the US and Canada. There, I said it. All I hear is this passive bullshit and empty promises; nothing concrete, nothing balls-to-the-wall to actually get shit done. Empty. Fucking. Garbage.
Wrong Lincoln. What you need is the Hot Rod Lincoln, Iacocca’s Lincoln, the hidden gem that came from Ford’s Lincoln division in late 1968.
Idk, I have a strong fascination with the Salton Sea. This barren wasteland in the middle of a bigger desert. The story behind it is even more fascinating. I have never been, but, as hellish as it sounds, I still want to go and see it at some point.
Worked for several companies that did this. It’s technically illegal, yes, but all shitty employers know that if anyone complains, A) they can fire them (without just cause) and B) the employee likely won’t take legal action against them, because like A, they can (and likely will) be fired, and that they can’t afford…
It really is. And I think it’s more so about the fact that the CVT can’t handle big power (or anything more than 182 hp, which is what the 2.5 tops out at). I remember the H6 was kind of sloppy with the CVT when I test-drove it, but yeah with the 2.4 turbo that lag was just intolerable. Here’s hoping Subaru will…
FYI, I own a 2018 Outback and have been getting pretty solid fuel economy- like all things, it depends on how heavy-footed I am. I am averaging 8.7 to 9.0 L/100 km; that’s pretty good for a 4,000+ lbs vehicle.
I can appreciate the dream and the vision some of these startups have, but considering the amount of resources and manpower needed to get a fleet of these things reliability (and efficiently) flying is something that borders on the impossible.
This was pretty insightful, thanks for explaining that - I’ve always wondered. I have a stock plastic skid plate under my 2018 Outback, which saved my ass a few times, but I also know it will not stand up to any significant abuse.
It’s so much worse in the 2021 Outback, especially with the 2.4 turbo. Had an XT for the day and the throttle was just all over the place; it was either flying off the line too quick or it just had no power at all. I still think that CVT is no good with that engine. With the 2.5, while slow, I feel it handles it a bit…
