Yeah it’s been subverted a few times, and you know what, they worked! Michelle Yeoh was cool as hell in Tomorrow Never Dies. Elektra King was a fake damsel who was a ruthless sociopath in on the scheme and it worked.

Having a female Bond seems like an overcorrection, but Bond movies could use more than just the “damsel in distress” roles. That’s happened a few times over the years, but not that frequently.
I’m sure that’s the way Cody intended it, and the way I interpreted it on watching it, especially since Juno is so derogatory and dismissive of the anti-choice protester. However, anti-choice advocates don’t understand subtlety, and likely see it as the anti-choice protester actually convincing Juno and thus being in…
Not to mention that “choice” means just that. You can’t want choice for women then be upset when they make a selection you disagree with. Plenty of women choose to give birth and allow a family who can’t conceive to adopt their children.
I mean, isn’t one of the “choices” to NOT have an abortion? The idea is that everyone should be free to make that choice, not that everyone must be required to be in favor of abortions.
I think the movie does a good job showing how vulnerable you are being young and pregnant. Juno is taken advantage of and influenced by a lot of other peoples expectations on her body. I didn’t find it anti-choice, instead I think it did a good job of showing what a traumatic experience it is having so many others…
dated for two years in 1992 when she was 18 and he was 33...
Some of my favorite contemporary pairings not mentioned in this piece:
At this point, Edgar Wright should be required to work with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Love all of his work with them, disappointed in all his output without them.
In terms of Oscar Isaac, I do think the fact that he was already seen as a near lock for Scenes from a Marriage made it less likely he would score a second nod because it would have had to be in the same category. He picked up both at the HCAs, but they separate cable and streaming. I don’t think May had enough to do.
Where are the writing and directing noms>?
i’d love to see them make better shows!
These are the Emmy’s, not the Kids’ Choice Awards.
Something, something “not really cinema”, something, something.
I agree. There’s a bunch of “Outstanding Casting” categories but apparently that’s more for the casting director(s) than the actual cast.
no Osscar Issac or Ethan Hawke for Moonknight?
No Cena, Robert Patrick for Peacemaker?!
booo (tbf a lot of the nominees did earn it, too much good tv)
I really wish the Emmys had a “Best Ensemble” award - there would so many contenders this year (my personal vote would go to White Lotus).
She ever coming back to What We Do in the Shadows?
JAWS! It’s not unusual for it to be shown in theatres on the 4th, and it’s so much fun in a theatre. Several years ago I got a group of friends to go with me who’d never seen it. Ugh, to people who think of the movie JAWS as “Jaws movies”, as in “I’ve never seen a Jaws movie”. There’s only one JAWS!
