You just missed the part where the mother gives up on killing herself, her son and a mentally challenged kid from the neighborhood, and instead, decides to throw one of them a birthday party by candlelight. She hands out graham cracker crumbs in lieu of cake.

Haven't you seen a movie where a guy gets rejected by a girl, walks the streets alone in a sad montage where the rejection is amplified by random misery heaped on him as he makes his way home? Kids laughing at him, etc.
