It’s unethical to farm them in the first place, pasture-raised or not, because they have a tremendous environmental impact that could be avoided entirely if people just got their protein from vegetable sources instead (which is possible on large swaths of our planet).

The only way there are enough calories in the world WHEN YOU INCLUDE THE MEAT.

Our entire food system is fucked up. A lot of human labor is involved in the non-animal products you consume.

Kill them humanely? How does that even make sense to you?

omg bears..... blink twice if your zookeepers are forcing you to say this.

She’s not comparing animals to people. She’s trying to shine light on how open range farming is proposed as something “better” than factory farming, in the same way that people have made arguments for slavery under certain conditions.

I don’t get this logic at all. Should Sea World be able to continue their whale and orca shows as long as they breed the animals to be used in the shows?

I like the thought you’ve put into your comment. As sort of an answer, from my own personal perspective as a vegan at least, it doesn’t matter if an animal feels emotions as I do. Their “level” of emotional complexity or depth or whatever doesn’t factor in to my decision not to kill and eat them. I don’t kill and eat

For me, in terms of eating meat, there is no single question to ask. There are a lot of things to consider. Does the animal feel pain? Do I need to eat meat? What impact does eating meat have on the environment? What do I eat if I don’t eat meat?

“Temple Grandin sagely points out that livestock exist largely so we can eat them. If we did not, they would not live at all.”

Not a good argument. I wish people would stop using it.

So, I dig Temple Grandin but my question is, if livestock exists solely for that purpose and they use SO many resources (water, food, land) and have a significant environmental impact, why do we keep breeding them? At this point those animals are nothing but food, right? Wouldn’t it be easier NOT to breed and raise

Oh man, the comments are going to be terrible on this.

What a friend posted on Facebook:

Which is to say, this is fucking awful. Even on the terms of some coldly rational trophy-hunting-is-good-for-the-economies-of-poor-African-nations bullshit, this is a disaster. Cecil was a source of steady income for the local tourism industry, as tourists paid to stay in the nearby lodge and hired guides to find him

Here’s a good example of pinkwashing:

Should she gloss over the hundreds of millions killed by capitalism instead?

Yeah, but Communism isn’t an identifiable entity unto itself with defined governance and accountability. Nor is it, at least in my understanding, at all an advocate for killing people by the millions. You can’t hold it responsible any more than you can hold Democracy responsible for killing millions of people just

It’s glossing over someone’s problematic actions just because they happen to be progressive when it comes to LBGT issues.
