I think you should start attempting “crazy” projects outside work, just to test your skills. This is what I did. Try something that is outside your comfort zone and keep on pushing and pushing. In my case mentor never came and I think I just learned a little bit from everyone and everything.

I always wanted to find a mentor / hero to imitate. I kept on studying, practicing and working hard so I will be ready. I never found a mentor however now I am mentoring others :)
