It feels like it would have amde a LOT more sense to adapt a story within a recongizable and popular setting within D&D that would give the movie a lot more recongizably and uniquely D&D concepts.

I think there's a very good movie that could be made out of LOTR that would be less commercial and action focused and feel more like ancient myth, ponderous and enigmatic, but it would certainly be less popular and sell less tickets
