I wrote to Gawker long ago, back when Choire was still in charge and had a long back and forth with him about it. He said it was their style to use those superfluous hyphens, regardless of AP Style or anyone else. I think it’s a Nick thing, honestly.

Just because it’s not a cliche, like “heart-wrenching,” doesn’t mean it’s not a legitimate usage. Now, if we’re going to talk about usage problems, lets talk about their constant use of “comprised of.”

Dude, I’m a pretty big nerd too, but this should not be your hill to die on. Per the dictionary, a tertiary definition of to wrench is:
