Code readers are definitely essential, in my mind, for your exact type of case.  Its just crazy that the cars these days cant just throw up the code and that my bluetooth readers just stopped support.

I have had three bluetooth OBD readers.  Exactly zero remain supported.  What still works?  The cable reader my dad bought years before any of my bluetooth ones.
