Yep. Thouh apparently, they think these planets orbit in time with their rotation, the way the moon does with the earth - so there’s a “light side” that always faces the sun, and a “dark side” that gets no light at all. If that’s true, then there wouldn’t be any seasons at all.

California is a “donor state” - that is, they pay much more in federal taxes than they get back in benefits from the federal government. Their tax dollars go to support states in the rust belt, deep south, etc. Seceding would cause CA (and the other states) a lot of problems, but CA losing federal benefits is

You know California is where your food comes from, right?   They’re the #1 agriculture state in the US by a very large margin. They’re also where the tech companies are, many of the ports, etc. They’d be fine.

Just like the Confederacy. Which is the joke, dude.

That’s the best thing I’ve read all week.

We’ve always been at war with Eurasia.

Racists are often willing to accept that there are “good minorities”, who they consider to be the rare exceptional individuals capable of rising up from their otherwise inferior group to earn a place among white people. (*gag*) They can then use these individuals to delude themselves and others into thinking they are

Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s exactly what it means. Someone else also proposed that............ Hitler.

I think it means that you deport everyone who’s not white and Christian.... which is what Hitler proposed, too.

Hmm, I think you’re right. Days and seasons are caused by the turning of the earth & the tilt of the axis. If the planet doesn’t turn relative to the star, then the climate should be static year round and there wouldn’t be days and nights. I guess that... what part of the planet would be habitable would depend on how

If they have water, I bet the closeness has a big effect on the tides.

Man, 6 and 9 day orbits? You’d have an entire course of seasons in a week. If life has evolved there, I bet those short seasons have led to some major evolutionary differences from earth.

Though life, at least primitive forms of it, can exist without an oxygenated atmosphere.

Amazon keeps recommending me a book called, I think, “They Thought They Were Free”. I’ve been waiting to check it out until I’m done with “The Origins of Totalitarianism”, but it might be what you’re looking for.

Don’t be ashamed, we’re all indoctrinated into this racist culture as kids. It’s hard to root out that insidious programming, or even see it in the first place.

Saudi Arabia is largely Sunni and Iran is largely Shia. I’m not sure if that’s the root of their conflict, or if it’s just because they’re two of the biggest powers in the Middle East and the religious angle is a coincidence (probably not). But a lot of the conflict in that region is really part of that power

It is a bit telling when “good muslims” happen to be the ones that violate their cultural and religious beliefs.

The “left”, generally speaking, supports moderate religious folk of all faiths who strive to live in a pluralistic secular society. Most Muslims, especially ones that live in the US, are not the kind of Wahabi fundamentalists you’re talking about. Many American Muslims came here, or their parents or grandparents

My guess? They’re afraid that workers willing to take a day off to protest are also workers willing to strike and unionize, and they’d rather hire 30 new people than to risk having to pay a better wage or provide benefits.

They may feel threatened by workers who are willing to speak up for what they want, and feel that it’s better to purge them now and hire a more exploitable workforce then to risk having them go on strike again or try to unionize.
