Song of the South is set in post Civil War Georgia. The farm workers are sharecroppers. Yes, the setting paints a rosier picture than reality.
It's fun to read some older fiction. Not the "classics"—but the best sellers, often made into movies. Some of them still really hold up.
That's an interesting take on the story. But Holm's character was an heiress who married a playwright. And they had a sophisticated mostly urban lifestyle (with occasional use of the house in the the country). Not a kid in sight.
I loved him in Pygmalion. GBS helped the production & made some changes to his play that were later used by Lerner & Lowe. (But it was set in "contemporary" London.) Wendy Hiller was luminous as Eliza & Howard's brilliant Henry Higgins was not as bad a match for her as the too-mature Rex Harrison was for Audrey…
