For a time Valley West had a thriving arcade; I have fond memories of watching a friend of mine destroy people on SFII there. Then there was a shooting or something, and the whole scene went downhill quick.  Is the mall even still there?

As far as I know, it's unclear whether Mal actually recieved any brevet commissions or was simply assuming more responsibility because somebody had to.  The brevet explanation seems likely enough.  Given how chaotic the final days of the war apparently were, it's also entirely possible the Alliance's records are…
