The character is necessary for the plot.  The Serenity crew don't really have the expertise or resources to broadcast what they find on Miranda the way Mr. Universe can.

Me too.  I clearly remember thinking, "Ah, okay, so I guess this is the last Firefly story, and if they make more movies I guess they'll be prequels…"  I fully believed Whedon capable of it, but in retrospect, there's no way Universal would have let him do that.
