I’m from Germany. Some of my relatives went to South Carolina after the war (they’re scattered all over the state now), but my branch of the family stayed here (though they tried to emmigrate to Canada once).

I’m German and I know only two colloquialisms with butter. Alles ist in Butter (everything is in butter) means everything is okay. Butter bei die Fische tun (to add butter to the fish, usually said as a command) means to tell the truth or to get straight to the point.

When my parents had trouble to conceive they looked into adoption. They were both around 30 at the time and were denied because they were ‘too old’. Apparently you have to figure out from the get go that you want to adopt, have to have problems to have children of your own, but be in perfect health otherwise.

26 years ago they did a C-section on my mother less than 12 hours after her water broke because she wasn’t going into labor no matter what they did. She was also 38, which was considered ancient back then.
