I think the problem you’re going to run into is that there is no way to scientifically define cultural norms.
the only possible redeeming factor of greek life is that it can be radically different at different schools. I am an Alpha Phi. My experience has almost nothing in common with the chapter at Alabama except ritual and our letters. Some groups do it right. Many others, sadly, do it very very wrong.
As someone from the south, Yes. But also, the whole fraternity/sorority institution is dumb and unnecessary. This is like story 5,434 this year showing how terrible the Greek system is.
Yeah, six whole weeks to get to know around 300 people, who are only showing you their public ‘fake-friendly’ face to lull one into a sense of safety and belonging.
Wow. That is awesome you had that experience.
Don’t they call that...having friends? Maybe just...have friends? Without all this stupid racist history shit behind it. Fuck these institutions. Burn ‘em all down.
The majority of white people, even the good ones, are utter cowards. They’d much rather have minorities fight this fight. Then, we get pigeonholed as “angry [insert ethnicity]”.
They straight up don’t care if people think they’re racist because they care more about appearing “proper” to the people with “status.”
Fuck this. These girls are the worst. I really don’t understand why we have greek life on campuses anymore anyway (and don’t tell me about how they “do so much philanthropy” because that is B.S.)
Goodness these kids take their little college groups so seriously. “The Machine”? My face during that whole paragraph article:
Really? What a ridiculous policy.
They give a shit because Mom was in a sorority, and that’s how she met Dad. Dad got his sweet corporate job through one of his frat bro’s dads. Every adult in their life is telling them “being a part of this organization is the key to the Successful White People Club.” And they’re 18, so they don’t have a ton of life…
Sometimes I thank my lucky stars for being born into a crunchy Northeastern Jewish family and attending an all-women’s art college. And by “sometimes” I mean ALL THE DAMN TIME.
I’m equally perplexed by the fact that a young, beautiful, and competent black woman would want to join such a group.
I feel like she’s basically a prom queen except sadder because this isn’t high school anymore yet you’re still doing the same shit.
I’m not sure what’s sillier here. The fact that there is a secret sorority organization called “The Machine” and it actually has some kind of authority? Or the fact that there are so many people who buy into continuing to join and give these organizations gravitas. It appears a light needs to be brought to bear on…
Fear of what you do not understand; because it undermines all that you believe to be right and ultimately, the power you hold.
I will never understand how when the signs are clear that times are changing, people will double down on their bigoted ideas. Why is it so much easier to choose hate?
Member is probably one of the grossest words for penis. Not the grossest but gross ! Right up there with trouser snake and rod
