He noted no grounds to his objection beyond that it was given to “this man.” If he’s (rightly) offended that the award sometimes goes to people who lack substance, he should have said that. Or objected to the dozens of starlets who’ve received this award for nominal contributions in the years since 2001. That would

I was going to argue with you that the fact that Moira Smith, a relatively unknown woman, got it for, you know, doing something, suggests that the award is not about simple visibility. But then I looked at the list of previous Women of the year: Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, etc.

in the face of (as he points out), a vast number of women (and transgender women) more deserving of such an award

I agree, but.. I can’t name any of these other more deserving women. That probably says a lot more about me than about their existence, but it’s the truth. Visibility is important and Caitlyn is someone that people are, for better or worse, aware of or even invested in. Just from my perspective, at work I have been

As I stated elsewhere, if the lack of contribution was this widower’s issue, then he wouldn’t have worded his rejection specifically by referring to Jenner as “Bruce” and “this man.” His problem is that they gave it to a transgender person, not with Jenner’s current status as a reality star.

Transitioning is an act of bravery, and I have an easier time understanding Caitlyn’s award if I see it as being for trans women as a whole than if I see it as being for her specifically as an individual.

I think it is very brave of her to transition so publicly; but it does seem hard to believe there are no better candidates. Of course, it is an award from Glamour magazine, FFS, not the Nobel Prize.

You know, I’ve been wondering about that kind of thing lately. A couple of weeks ago I overheard a co-worker at my new job getting really shrill about not accepting Caitlyn Jenner as a woman. (“I don’t care what he wears or what he calls himself, he has a penis! He’s a man!”)

She’s actually been doing a lot of awareness outreach and is hosting a show that is telling other trans* stories and giving them a platform. She’s far from perfect, but she is trying to be there for her sisters and brothers both in this task.

I give up. This should be a THIS gif but it got kinja’d.

If this guy thinks it’s such an insult for his wife to share this kind of award with a transgender person, I wonder why he didn’t return the award when they gave it to Laverne Cox a couple of years ago...

While it is true that Caitlyn Jenner transitioned with privileges that far too few trans* enjoy, I think responses like Mr. Smith’s make it pretty clear that transitioning is still an act of bravery.

Another dumb reason why I want Hillary over Bernie: the Republicans reaction would be hilarious.

Do they not realise she is full on Obi-Wan at this point: Strike her down and she becomes more powerful !

I’d be more sympathetic to House reps if they weren’t so adamantly against giving workers the right to take time off too. And essentially the month-long vacation in August is a combination of home district time and family time.

How is this dude re-elected?!

Given the lack of legislation since the GOP took over in 2011 and the repeated and unneeded last second deals to prevent closing the government or blowing up the debt ceiling or whatever, this “work” schedule is an insult to the American people.

I would care less about their calendar if they didn’t waste taxpayer money on Benghazi and PP witch trials. Like if they ACTUALLY got stuff done.

I think you’ll find the average American - in the new economy - may have ZERO vacation, sick days or paid leave. At least that’s the position I find myself in after 40 years in the labor market. In a skilled profession (broadcasting). And with two jobs. Executive Assistant (real estate) and part time broadcaster. And

Eh, my heart bleeds peanut butter. It’s fairly easy for them to publish their non-DC work hours if they’re tired of people giving them the side eye for their workload.
