You often can’t insure what isn’t registered. It also means you have to trailer it everywhere, vs drive it there and and back.

At least in California, you have to either keep the registration current or pay a “Planned Non-Operation” fee. If you just let it lapse, DMV will come after you for the full amount owed when you try and re-register.
