The usual explanation I hear is that when Jesus was crucified it purified everything so that you no longer have to follow the “ritual” laws, but the “moral” laws are still in effect. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how you are supposed to distinguish the ritual laws from the moral laws. I would have thought the moral laws…

It’s clearly a dangerous practice. Many women get raped during it and last year a girl died of suffocation. Not wanting this to happen is hardly “imposing your beliefs.”
